A rotary variable displacement transducer, also called a rotary variable differential transformer is an electromechanical transducer which delivers an adjustable alternating current (AC) output voltage that is directly proportionate to the angular movement of its input shaft. The output signal is linear within a quantified range over the angular movement, when energized with a fixed AC source. The basic rotary variable displacement transducer comprises of two secondary windings and a single primary winding. The electromotive force induced in the secondary winding is a function of rotary displacement. The two secondary windings are positioned in such a fashion that they produce electromotive force that is 180 degree out of phase from one another. Thus, when the shaft is at null position, the electromotive force induced in two secondary windings are opposite in phase and equal to each other.
